Guwahati: Congress chief Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday flayed the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal for his remarks in opposition to the Congress and accused him of being hand in glove with chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma since he turned the CM final 12 months.
Refuting Ajmal’s latest allegation that Congress’s Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh and state PCC chief Bhupen Borah are in ‘Sarma’s pockets’, Ramesh termed the AIUDF chief’s feedback because the “most unacceptable and totally bogus”. Ajmal had mentioned, “Congress celebration leaders, together with Jitendra Singh, are in Himanta Biswa Sarma’s pocket. They are working as paid servants. After 12 pm at evening they individually go to gather their packets.”
“These (remarks) are blatantly defamatory,” said AICC general secretary (communications) Ramesh. Instead, he called Ajmal a mouthpiece of the BJP. “Shri Ajmal is nothing but a mouthpiece of the BJP like some other parties like the AIMIM,” alleged Ramesh.
Even as Ajmal has been claiming to be a part of the UPA, the senior Congressman said, “He (Ajmal) has nothing whatsoever to do with the UPA as he claims.”
Ajmal’s AIUDF was a key ally in the Congress-led alliance of anti-BJP parties in the 2021 assembly polls, but cracks evolved between the two parties soon after the poll results were out. Allegations and counter allegations continued between the two parties, accusing leaders of being in secret understanding with Sarma and the BJP.
“It is true that the Congress and the AIUDF fought the last assembly election as an alliance. That decision had not been an easy one to take for the Congress. But it was taken in the belief that Shri Ajmal would be a consistent and reliable partner and who would strengthen secular forces in the state and in the country,” Ramesh said in a statement.
He said after the assembly election results were out, it became “very clear” that Ajmal had worked out an understanding with the chief minister. “The two worked out a deal with the sole purpose of maligning and defaming the Congress and its leadership,” Ramesh alleged.
He said Sarma and Ajmal had started attacking the Congress more aggressively after the “extraordinary success” of the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Rahul Gandhi and its Assam leg that concluded last month.
According to Congress sources, they received “particular inputs” that a number of MLAs of Ajmal’s celebration had voted in favour of BJP-supported candidates within the Rajya Sabha election final 12 months. The opposition, regardless of claiming to have the requisite numbers to win in one of many two seats, its consensus candidate, Congress’s Ripun Bora, did not get the required votes.
