GUWAHATI: The collective failure of the federal government, together with all stakeholders, in creating mass consciousness and lack of well timed intimation about teen moms from hospitals are the primary causes behind the excessive variety of baby marriages within the state, Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) chairperson Sunita Changkakoti mentioned on Monday.
Changkakoti mentioned many such instances may have been detected in hospitals had they been immediate in informing police about teen pregnancies. “However, after visiting hospitals in the state, we have found that no such communication was made to the police ever. The hospital authorities discharge their duties, but are least concerned about the child marriage menace. This gap has to be bridged to prevent child marriages and teenage pregnancies,” she added.
She additional mentioned lack of training and acute poverty in distant areas are the opposite components behind poor households marrying off their daughters early.
Stating that the fee isn’t the implementing authority of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, she added, “The implementing authorities have failed to enforce the Act over the years and that has resulted in very low detection of child marriage cases.”
