GUWAHATI: The NIA special court, Guwahati, sentenced a cadre of the now-disbanded National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) to life imprisonment in reference to a 2014 case of indiscriminate firing on villagers in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, which resulted in the loss of life of seven civilians and grievous accidents to 2.
The court convicted Rabi Basumatary alias Rongjabaja alias Rabi underneath varied expenses of IPC and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, on March 13 and pronounced the sentence on Tuesday.
The NIA, in a press assertion issued on Wednesday, stated on May 1, 2014, Rabi, together with six different NDFB cadres, had entered Balapra village underneath Gossaigaon police station of Kokrajhar district of Assam, the place they opened indiscriminate hearth on the villagers on the directions of high NDFB management headed by G Bidai and Songbijit.
In this regard, the special NIA court had registered a special case in 2015. Rabi was arrested in 2016 and chargesheeted by the NIA in March 2017 by means of a supplementary chargesheet.
The unique chargesheet in the case was filed in Gossaigaon towards one accused Pradip Brahma alias Pwler in August 2015. The second supplementary chargesheet was filed in October 2019 towards one other accused, Upen Basumatary alias Usaobadao, whereas a 3rd supplementary chargesheet was filed in January 2021 towards the remaining accused individuals who’ve been absconding.
