Guwahati: Ahead of the three-day Assam go to by the complete bench of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in view of the delimitation train, the Centre on Friday clarified within the Lok Sabha that there isn’t any provision to extend the variety of current meeting or parliamentary constituencies in Assam.
This was said by Union regulation minister Kiren Rijiju in a written reply to a query requested by Congress MP from Assam Pradyut Bordoloi.
Assam has 14 Lok Sabha constituencies, whereas the variety of meeting constituencies within the state are 126.
The ECI group is scheduled to go to the state from March 26 to twenty-eight to oversee and monitor the continued delimitation train for redrawing the territorial boundaries of the parliamentary constituencies and meeting segments.
“The Election Commission of India has been entrusted to undertake the delimitation exercise in the State of Assam under the provisions of section 8A of the Representation of People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950) and section 9 of the Delimitation Act, 2002 (33 of 2002). The provisions of articles 82 and 170 (3) of the Constitution of India and the Delimitation Act, 2002 (33 of 2002) provide for the delimitation exercise on the basis of 2001 census,” Rijiju stated.
