GUWAHATI: The arrests on costs of both marrying underage women or solemnising and inspiring such marriages crossed the two,400-mark on the fourth day of the crackdown, prompting the federal government to transform the Matia transit camp, which was constructed for declared foreigners in Goalpara, and a stadium in Silchar into short-term jails to accommodate the arrestees.
Till Sunday, 2,278 have been arrested.
Assam Police IG (legislation & order) Prashanta Kumar Bhuyan, who can be the official spokesperson, mentioned: “Jails in a few districts have become overcrowded for which the Assam government has converted the Matia transit camp and a stadium in Silchar into temporary jails. The transit camp has a capacity of 3,000 inmates.”
Four individuals, who’ve married underage women, have been booked underneath Section 9 of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, which offers with punishment of male grownup who contracts youngster marriage. Similarly, individuals who’ve solemnised youngster marriages have been booked underneath Section 10 of the Act and individuals who’ve promoted or permitted solemnising youngster marriages have been booked underneath Section 11 of the Act. As of Monday, the police have arrested 2,441 males, together with those that married underage women, their members of the family, clergymen and kazis.
A lawyer on situation of anonymity mentioned in keeping with the Act, an offence punishable underneath the mentioned Act is cognizable and non-bailable.
Meanwhile, wives of these arrested on costs of marrying underage women continued to demand their husbands’ launch. A girl, who was crying exterior the Biswanath police station, mentioned, “Who will take care of my family if they (police) keep my husband in jail? I have a one-year-old child.”
